The Zonta Club of the Joliet Area has supported and been sponsors of the Will County Take Back the Night event and rally since its inception, in 1997. The event brings attention to victims of domestic violence in Will County and provides access to organizations that can help those in need. This year, club members also participated on the planning committee and attended the event and walked the rally along Larkin Avenue. Take Back the Night Will County took place at Hufford Junior High School on October 5. Local organizations that support victims of domestic violence womanned resource tables. The ZCJA's Fearless Females Club of Joliet Central HS students helped individuals make statements signs for the rally that took place later in the evening.
Will County State's Attorney Jim Glasgow spoke about his office's continued efforts to support and protect women, especially those awaiting the criminal cases of their abusers. After, keynote speaker and abuse survivor Nikki Merriman spoke of her experience. Then, the names of sixty victims of death by domestic abuse in Will County from the past 10 years were read and honored. A rally on Larkin Avenue concluded this powerful event.
