Zonta Club of Joliet to Hold Annual Fundraiser March 6 Honoring Joliet Central Teachers & Raising Money for Guardian Angel Home

The Zonta Club of Joliet will hold its annual fundraiser on Sunday, March 6 at the Mistwood Golf Club located at 1700 W. Renwick Road in Romeoville.  The event begins with a social hour from 11 to 12 p.m. followed by lunch at noon.

Z Club 2The event program includes the honor of naming the 2016 Zonta Club of Joliet Women of Distinction, a person or group of women who have contributed to Zonta’s mission of increasing the status of women around the world.  This year’s Women of Distinction are Ashley Samsa and Veryl Boykin, teachers at Joliet Central High School and Fearless Female Z Club Sponsors.

The Joliet Central Fearless Female Z Club was recently chartered by the Zonta Club of Joliet this year and has partnered with Samsa and Boykin to provide mentoring and service opportunity to the high school girls.

Samsa founded the Fearless Females at Joliet Central High School in 2012 when a student approached her.   “The idea for Fearless Females first came about because a student asked me how I became a feminist and how she could become one, too,” Samsa explained.  “I asked her if she believed that women should be treated the same as men, and she said yes, and I replied: ‘Congratulations!  You’re a feminist.’  She asked me if there were any groups on campus just for young feminist girls and I said I didn’t think there were any.  Thus, Fearless Females was born.  We focus on awareness of women’s issues like domestic violence, sexual abuse, body image, career goals and many more.  We also strive to do many service projects that focus on helping women.”

Under the leadership of Samsa and Boykin, Fearless Female Club membership has skyrocketed since inception; the club began with about ten girls and has grown to include over 40 members.  In fact, many of the young high school girls will be in attendance at the event to witness Boykin and Samsa receive their award.  “Zonta members are proudly sponsoring Fearless Female Z Club members so that they can attend the fundraiser,” said Joliet Zonta President Yolanda Reyes.  “But it is more than just paying the price of the ticket.  Girls who are sponsored will shadow a Zonta member, assisting with the service for the day and sitting at their table.  We are so excited about this mentorship opportunity that teaches volunteerism, networking and socialization.”

Proceeds from the March 6 fundraiser benefit local charities that serve, assist and empower women.   “Every two years the Joliet Zonta membership designates a local charity to receive the fundraiser profits,” said Fundraising Co-Chair Beth Colvin.  “This year’s local beneficiary is Guardian Angel Home, and we are proud to financially support this not-for-profit organization that provides transitional housing to women and their children while empowering women to become self-sufficient through education and physical, emotional, financial and spiritual recovery.”

To further raise funds at the event, an extensive array of raffle baskets are available, as well as a 50/50 raffle and the traditional interactive game of “Heads or Tails.”

Tickets for the fundraiser are $75 and must be purchased in advance.  For more information, or to purchase your tickets, contact this year’s co-chairs, Beth Colvin, at bclvn@aol.com and 815-386-7022 or Kathy Giegerich at kathyg1500@aol.com or 815-351-3503.
